OK, SO YOU’VE MADE UP YOUR MIND. YOU WANT TO COLOR YOUR HAIR…BUT, THERE’S SO MUCH TO CONSIDER! WE WANT TO HELP SIMPLIFY THE PROCESS. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR SITUATION IS, ONE MAIN FACTOR CONTRIBUTES TO ALL SUCCESSFUL HAIR COLORING: TO GET TO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO, EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU’RE STARTING.
First, let’s talk about the two different types of hair color, Demi-Permanent and Permanent. All hair coloring services involve one of these types. The type you use will create different results and require different maintenance.
Demi-Permanent color gradually fades out, causing no line of regrowth, and it doesn’t require you to commit to coloring your hair forever. Demi-permanent hair color involves larger molecules than permanent hair color. The molecules only partially penetrate the hair shaft in most cases (overly porous hair can absorb more color than resistant textures).
Permanent hair color opens the cuticle with ammonia (or an ammonia derivative) and penetrates the cortex, lifting the preexisting color out and depositing the new color. One thing to keep in mind when using permanent hair color is, it doesn’t just fade out. You will get a regrowth line, and you will need to continue to see your colorist about every 4-6 weeks.
FOLLOWING ARE SOME TIPS THAT WILL MAKE COLORING YOUR HAIR A LITTLE EASIER.
“MY HAIR CURRENTLY HAS COLOR”
This is super common. When you have color in your hair already, it impacts the outcome of new color. It doesn’t matter if you colored it yesterday or last year, unless you cut that color out, it is still there even if you can’t see it. Let your colorist know; they’ll need to change the formula to get the desired color you want.
“I LOVE MY NATURAL HAIR COLOR, I JUST WISH IT WAS A LITTLE LIGHTER.”
Even though it seems like a small change, it’s still a totally different color. Lightening all of your hair requires the use of permanent hair color. The existing color will need to be lifted to add the new color because demi-permanent color doesn’t have the ability to penetrate and lift hair color.
“I JUST WANT TO ADD SOME DEPTH OR BRIGHTEN MY HAIR UP A LITTLE BIT”
Demi-permanent hair color would be great! At Nicholas Scott Salon, we use Colorance by Goldwell which is an ammonia-free option that could enhance your natural color, all while strengthening the hair and adding beautiful shine.
“MY HAIR HAS NEVER BEEN COLORED, BUT I REALLY WANT TO COVER THESE GRAYS.”
If you would like your gray hairs completely covered, you should use all-over permanent hair color. It completely removes any hint of gray. Now, all-over color with permanent dye may sound like something you could do yourself with box dye. More than likely, this is incorrect. Box dye can’t customize the formula to the correct mixture for your hair type and texture. It is more of a “one size fits all,” so it’s best to leave it to a professional.
“OKAY, TOTALLY COVERING THESE GRAYS MAKES ME NERVOUS.“
An all-over demi-permanent color is a great option here; it will blend your gray hair rather than completely cover it. Our Colorance line can cover up to 75% of gray hair and may be a good route to go, especially when it’s your first time with hair color.
Formulating the correct color for you is no easy task for your colorist, no matter how simple it may seem. Because we want to find the most successful and beautiful solution, any color appointment will begin with a detailed consultation. Examining your hair type, texture, current color, and sometimes doing a test strand helps us formulate the perfect color for you.
We’d love to hear from you and help you arrive at your desired hair destination. To schedule an appointment or consultation, or simply ask a question about your situation, call 978-801-0303

Keratin Treatment Before and After
What is Keratin? Keratin therapy is a smoothing therapy provided in-salon to restore and restructure the hair by infusing a special blend of hydrolyzed keratin deep into the cuticle. The keratin is adhered to the cuticle with a flat iron to relax the hair strands at the sub-cuticle layer. Keratin is a type of protein high in the amino acid “cystine” this special amino acid is what makes hair super tough and extremely elastic. Keratin treatments are not relaxers but a smoothing treatment . Keratin treatments provides smoothness and shine of hair and your hair will be more manageable, easy to style and more resistant to humidity.
Why should you do a Keratin treatment? Women have become very addicted to flat ironing their hair in order to achieve smooth hair. They are not realizing the damage it does to their hair. Flat iron damages the hair more severely than even chemical services. Think of baking a cake at 350 degrees…would you stick your head in an oven? With a Keratin treatment you will eliminate the need to flat iron and prevent thermal damage. If you have coarse and curly hair the Keratin will make it manageable and cut down on blow drying time and eliminate frizz.
What is involved in Keratin treatments? Keratin treatments can take anywhere to 2 to 4 hours depending on length and thickness of hair. The process involves shampooing with a clarifying shampoo and then blow dried. The treatment is then applied section by section and combed through the hair followed by blow dry and flat iron. This will seal in the treatment.
What are my responsibilities for after care? It is the after care of your keratin treatment that is crucial to ensuring its effectiveness. You must wait 72 hours before you can shampoo your hair and it must remain straight and dry at all times. This means you cannot wear hair barrettes, head bands, hats or tuck your hair behind your ears. In other words, you cannot “bend” your hair for 72 hours. It is important to use sulphate- free shampoo to avoid stripping the keratin from your hair.
When can I color my hair? Color treatments can be done prior to a keratin treatment which will seal in the color. In fact, a keratin treatment can repair any potential damage done after chemically treated or relaxed hair.
Who can do Keratin treatments? Keratin treatments work on a variety of hair textures including African American and all ethnic hair types that tend to be unmanageable, frizzy or curly. Also those who want to cut down blow dry time by 50% and color-treated or previously chemically-treated hair
Who should not get Keratin treatments? Keratin treatments are not recommended if you have severely damaged hair from too much bleaching or bleached hair that is super fine and fragile.
How long does it last? Keratin treatment will last anywhere between 2-4 months.
Are Keratin treatments safe? OSHA (Occupational Health & Safety Administration) has deemed Keratin treatments containing 2% or less of formaldehyde are considered safe and can be used with proper ventilation and performed by a licensed professional. Many would say that Keratin hair treatments are the best thing invented since “sliced bread”! Those who have had keratin hair treatments call them a “miracle” and applaud them for making blow drying and straightening their hair much easier for months at a time. For best results choose the right salon and stylist carefully. Remember cheaper deals do not guarantee best results. An experienced stylist at Nicholas Scott Salon will guide you to healthy shiny hair.
